Extra care housing is suitable for people who want or are able to maintain their independence with regular assistance from care staff.
Staff provide assistance according to an agreed support plan.
The facilities are similar to sheltered housing but with extra support.
Some are mixed facilities, catering for all ages and for people with physical disabilities or learning disabilities.
About the accommodation
Extra care housing typically includes:
- individual flats with private bathrooms, kitchens and your own front door
- a call system for use in an emergency or for assistance
- help with personal care, bathing, dressing, medication and meals as agreed
- visiting medical and nursing staff
- a restaurant, dining room and other communal facilities
- organised social activities
- support from a scheme manager
You can choose to use the communal facilities or live independently in your own flat with your own social network, family and friends.
You can join in with communal activities if you want to.
If you do not need this level of support, you may wish to consider sheltered housing.
Applying for extra care housing
Please note - paying for social care
It's important to understand that social care from any local authority, unlike the NHS, is not free. Please read more about what you might need to pay and make sure you're aware of this before requesting or agreeing to any services.
To apply for extra care housing, we first need to assess your needs and finances. See:
Finding suitable accommodation
