National improvement plan

Nationally, the number of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) is increasing.

This means the percentage of children and young people requiring SEN support and Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) is also rising. This has put major pressure on the system to meet the need of students with SEND.

In March 2023, the Government published its national improvement plan for SEND, which recognised the issues within the current SEND system.

The plan aims to address these issues by improving mainstream provision by supporting children and young people through ordinarily available provision (OAP). Therefore, children and young people will be supported with a focus on early intervention, providing the right support in the right place at the right time.
