You can find out what kind of tenancy you have with us in your tenancy agreement.
Probationary tenancy
We’ll give you a probationary tenancy when you first become a tenant of Hounslow Council. This is sometimes called an introductory or starter tenancy.
A probationary tenancy lasts for a trial period of 12 months.
Your tenancy agreement has details of your rights and responsibilities. They're very similar to those of secure tenants, but during a probationary tenancy you can’t:
- take in lodgers
- sublet all or part of your home
- make alterations to your property
- exchange your property
- buy your property using the Right to Buy scheme
Flexible tenancy
You’ll move onto a flexible tenancy after your 12-month trial period if you don't breach the terms and conditions of your tenancy agreement.
If you do breach the terms and conditions of your tenancy agreement, we might either:
- extend your probationary tenancy by six months
- end your tenancy
Your rights and responsibilities are set out in your tenancy agreement.
A flexible tenancy is a fixed term agreement. It usually has an end date of five years after the start date.
Lifetime tenancy
This is also known as a weekly periodic secure tenancy.
It is a tenancy with no end date, which means you have the tenancy until it is terminated.
You usually move to a lifetime tenancy at the end of a flexible tenancy.
