Most children and young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) can access school or college safely and do not need any type of travel assistance from us.
This can be done by:
- using public transport
- walking (accompanied if necessary)
If eligible, some children and young people may be offered school travel assistance. We will only provide school travel assistance to your child or young person if they have applied and have been assessed as eligible under the relevant school travel assistance policy.
If your child or young person has an EHCP, it does not automatically make them qualify for school travel assistance.
If your child or young person is eligible
They may be offered the following types of support:
- funding of an oyster card or travel card, where appropriate
- re-imbursement of a mileage allowance
- walking attendant or travel buddy
- independent travel training
- personal transport budget, which gives parents or carers the responsibility for getting their child to and from school or college
- a seat on a suitable shared vehicle, arranged by us, from an agreed pick-up point
There may also be other types of travel assistance available, if appropriate.
You can learn more about school travel assistance on the main Hounslow Council website.
