What to do if you think your child might be autistic

If you think your child may be autistic and they go to nursery or school, you can speak to their special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO). They will be able to advise what the next steps are, which may include talking to your GP.

You can find contact details for the nursery or school's SENCO on their website.

It is a good idea to keep a diary of your child’s behaviours and characteristics. This can help you explain your concerns to your GP.

If your GP or a SEND professional thinks your child may be autistic, they will refer them to be assessed.

Getting an autism assessment and diagnosis can help your child receive extra support.

If your child is under five years old

The autism assessment is completed by the child developmental team in the West London NHS Trust paediatrics team.

If your child or young person is five to 18 years old

The autism assessment is completed by Hounslow’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) neurodevelopmental team.

If you are 18 years old or over
