Discretionary Council Tax reduction
In exceptional circumstances, the council can reduce your Council Tax bill. This is known as a discretionary reduction.
Claims are considered on an individual basis and will only be granted where there is evidence of financial hardship or exceptional circumstances.
To apply
You must show that you have:
- explored all other possible discounts
- explored all other legitimate means of resolving the situation - if they have not been, it is unlikely an award will be made

If you are applying on the grounds of financial hardship you will need to provide proof of earnings and any savings for you and your household.
Successful applicants will be notified in writing within 10 days about the amount and period of the reduction. Relief will only apply to the Council Tax payer's primary home.
Appeals
If your application is unsuccessful we will notify you in writing of the reason for the decision. and you will have the right to appeal. Appeals must be submitted in writing within one month of the decision being made, clearly explaining reasons for the appeal.
If you are unhappy with the decision and wish to appeal the matter further, you can appeal directly to the Valuation Tribunal Service.
Fraud
If a reduction has been made because of a false or fraudulent claim we reserve the right to withdraw the award and will consider prosecution.
