Working at an election

Counting votes

Votes need to be counted after polls close at 10pm on polling day.

Depending on the election, counting may take place overnight or on the following day.

Count assistant 

Count assistants are required to sort and count the votes accurately, working as part of a team instructed by a count supervisor. 

Duties include:

  • Attending training and following the instructions of the count supervisor
  • Maintaining the secrecy of the ballot 
  • Acting professionally and impartially at all times 
  • Sorting and counting ballot papers
  • Recounting ballot papers, if required
  • Identifying doubtful ballot papers
