Overview
You can appoint another person to vote on your behalf in person at the polling station. A person appointed to vote on behalf of another elector is called a proxy.
An appointed proxy must be:
- 18 years old or older
- currently registered to vote at an address in the UK
- eligible to vote in the type of election you're voting in
You may wish to appoint a proxy because you know you cannot attend a polling station in person. As an alternative, you may also consider voting by post.
You usually need to apply to vote by proxy in advance of an election. However, there are circumstances where you can apply for an emergency vote by proxy.
An appointed proxy must vote in person on your behalf at the designated polling station for the address where you are registered to vote. If your proxy is unable to attend your polling station, a proxy voter can apply to vote on your behalf by post.
