Electoral register

Overview

As the Electoral Registration Officer, we keep two registers using information received from the public:

  • the electoral register
  • the open register (also known as the edited register)

The electoral register lists the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote in public elections. The register is used for electoral purposes, such as making sure only eligible people can vote.

It is also used for other limited purposes specified in law, such as:

  • detecting crime (for example, fraud)
  • calling people for jury service
  • checking credit applications

The open register is an extract of the electoral register. It is not used for elections.

It can be bought by any person, company or organisation. For example, it is used by businesses and charities to confirm name and address details.

Your name and address are included in the open register unless you ask for them to be removed. Removing your details from the open register does not affect your right to vote.

Registering your name and address

Your name and address appears on the electoral register after you register to vote.

Once you register, we will send you a confirmation letter to tell you when you will be added to your current address in the electoral register. If some details on your application are incomplete or unclear, we will write to you to request further information from you before we can add you to the electoral register.

Registration dates for 2025

A revised electoral register is published on 1 December every year. On the first working day of every other month, we publish a list of alterations (additions, deletions and amendments) to the electoral register. In the weeks prior to an election, we publish some additional lists of alterations.
