The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) partners with the Middlesex Association for the Blind (MAB) and Hounslow Council to provide two community-based eye care liaison officers (ECLOs) to support Hounslow residents with a visual impairment in Hounslow.
ECLOs offer practical and emotional support to blind and partially sighted people, their families and carers.
About ECLOs
ECLOs work closely with medical and nursing staff and the sensory impairment team. They provide practical and emotional support to people recently diagnosed with an eye condition. This helps them understand their diagnosis, deal with their sight loss and maintain their independence.
ECLOs play an important role because there is no eye clinic in Hounslow. They work by signposting and referring you to services that may help you. They can offer support and advice on:
- a range of eye conditions
- finding welfare benefits you may be entitled to
- remaining in employment or re-training
- mental health and emotional wellbeing
- children's services and where to get help with difficulties at school
- finding voluntary organisations and local support groups
ECLOs are also able to explain the process of becoming registered as blind or partially sighted and the benefits of being registered.
