When you cannot make decisions for yourself

Deputyship

A deputy acts on a person's behalf if they have lost capacity to make decisions and do not have lasting power of attorney (LPA).

A friend or family member can apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as a deputy.

Applying for deputyship can be complicated. If often takes a long time, which means decisions may be delayed. It also costs more than setting up an LPA.

Setting up an LPA in advance is much easier and gives you the most control.
