You can make a request to add or remove a tenant from your secure tenancy with us.
To add a joint tenant
We will consider joint tenancy applications from:
- married couples
- civil partners
- couples living together as if they are married or in a civil partnership
Under a joint tenancy, all the tenants share equal responsibility. This means they are jointly responsible for:
- keeping to the terms and conditions of the tenancy agreement
- paying rent and service charges
If one joint tenant doesn't pay their share of something then the other joint tenant is still equally responsible for the debt.
To remove a joint tenant
If you hold a joint tenancy with us and want to change this to a sole tenancy, you need to:
- seek legal advice
- apply for a property adjustment order
You should be to be able get support with this process from Citizens Advice Hounslow.
When a tenant is removed:
- the tenancy is assigned to the remaining tenant and a new tenancy agreement is not required
- it does not count as a statutory succession and any existing succession rights are not affected
