Carer's Allowance and Attendance Allowance

There are two key benefits associated with a situation where someone is providing care for another person:

  • Carer's Allowance
  • Attendance Allowance

Carer’s Allowance

Carer’s Allowance is money paid directly to a carer if:

  • they are aged 16 or over
  • they care for someone more for than 35 hours a week
  • that person receives certain benefits

You can find out more about Carer’s Allowance on the GOV.UK website.

Attendance Allowance

Attendance Allowance is paid to the cared-for person.

It helps with extra costs if you have a disability or health condition severe enough that you need someone to help look after you.

You need to be State Pension age or older.

You could get extra Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction if you get Attendance Allowance.

You can find out more about Attendance Allowance on the GOV.UK website.
